Upgrade of an existing Malfunctioning Wastewater Treatment System

Project: Design & Upgrade of an existing malfunctioning sequential batch reactor wastewater treatment system serving a Bar and Restaurant. Installation of a new sand polishing filter.

Description:

The existing treatment system and percolation area was installed 2009 for a Bar & Restaurant. In June 2014 the clients engineers contacted bioCycle with their issues:

  • Foul Odours
  • Overflowing Sewage
  • Frequent Emptying
  • Not Meeting Discharge License
  • Ponding in Percolation Area

Biocycle carried out a site visit and carried out a survey on the system. This survey revealed the following:

  • Designed for the system & percolation area did not meet any current regulation.
  • The System was only designed to treat a Population Equivalent  (P.E.) of 30. The required P.E. of the system should have been 50 P.E. based on EPA guidelines.
  • There was no Site Assessment, Installation or Commissioning Details.

BioCycle prepared a proposal to upgrade the treatment system to achieve an effluent quality of 20 mg/l BOD and 30 mg/l Suspended Solids. It was also proposed that a sand polishing filter being installed to further improve the effluent quality from the development.

BioCycle converted the existing concrete tanks into primary and coarse aeration treatment chambers. A fine aeration/clarification and a pump chamber was added to the existing system. A sand polishing filter comprising of 50m2 was installed to dispose of the treated effluent.

The upgrade works were carried out in full by BioCycle and on completion BioCycle certified that the system was suitable to achieve an effluent quality of 20mg/l BOD and 30mg/l SS.
